Program Outline

CCP presents a new Photographic Folio Critique program for practicing artists, professional photographers and tertiary and post-graduate students. This program has been created to provide participants with the informed and supportive critical feedback that is difficult to acquire outside an academic environment.

Private appointments will be scheduled with industry professionals Charlotte Day (freelance Curator and Writer), Matthew Sleeth (Melbourne-based photographic Artist) and Clare Williamson (Exhibitions Curator, State Library of Victoria).

Bookings are limited, so early registration is recommended.

INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Charlotte Day is a freelance Curator and Writer. Most recently she was Project Curator for Callum Morton’s outdoor installation for the 2007 Venice Biennale, and is currently an Associate Curator at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Co-Curator of the Michael Buxton Collection of Contemporary Australian Art. In 2005 she curated Ricky Swallow’s exhibition for the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and edited the book A Short Ride in a Fast Machine, a 20 year history of projects at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces. She has worked for over 12 years in contemporary art spaces in Melbourne including Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and as Director at Centre for Contemporary Photography (1999–2001).

Clare Williamson is currently Exhibitions Curator at the State Library of Victoria. She has worked previously as Associate Curator of Photography at the Queensland Art Gallery and as Curator at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. During this time she has undertaken professional residencies at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1990) and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK (1996). She has also visited the People’s Republic of China (1992) and Japan (1995) as a curatorial team member for the First and Second Asia-Pacific Triennials at Queensland Art Gallery. Clare has served on numerous other voluntary boards and committees in support of the arts including the City of Maribyrnong’s Public Art Advisory Panel (as Chair 2003–2006) and Centre for Contemporary Photography’s Board of Management.

Matthew Sleeth is a Melbourne-based artist and has exhibited widely in Australia, USA, Japan and Europe and as part of international events including the Berlin Photography Festival, Odense Photo Biennale (Denmark), Noorderlicht Photofestival (The Netherlands) and the Venice Architecture Biennale. A touring exhibition of his work will commence at Aperture Gallery, New York in 2008. Matthew was recently named as one of Australia’s 50 most collectable artists by Australian Art Collector magazine. Matthew’s work is held in major public collections in Australia and Denmark and numerous private collections. His books include Ten Series/106 Photographs (2007), Opfikon (2004), Survey (2004), home+away (2003), Tour Of Duty (2002), The Bank Book (2001) and Roaring Days (1998). Matthew is represented by Josef Lebovic Gallery (Sydney), Sophie Gannon Gallery (Melbourne), Jan Manton Art (Brisbane), Galerie Lichtblick (Cologne), Galleri Hornbaek (Denmark) and Nichido Contemporary Art (Tokyo).

DATES & TIMES

All sessions will take place at Centre for Contemporary Photography between 10am and 5.10pm on Monday 31 March, Tuesday 1 April and Wednesday 2 April 2008.

Each participant will attend a 30 minute appointment on each day, making a total of 90 minutes of private critical feedback over the three day program.

Appointment times will be assigned at the time of booking, and will be consistent across the three days of the program.

WHAT TO BRING

Please bring up to ten images from your photographic folio. Participants may bring either hardcopy prints or digital files or a combination of both.

Important note about digital files: Please bring digital files on CD in JPEG or Powerpoint format. CCP provides an Apple Macintosh laptop and data projector for viewing digital files. Please test your digital files before arriving at CCP for your appointment.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Participants will be assigned 30 minute appointments on Monday 31 March, Tuesday 1 April and Wednesday 2 April 2008.

Appointments are allocated on a first come first serve basis until all available times are filled.

Appointments will run strictly on time so it is essential that participants arrive at least five minutes before their appointed time. If a participant is unable to make an appointment, they must call CCP on 03 9417 1549.

A 50% deposit is required at time of bookings. Full payment is due by Wednesday 26 March 2008. If full payment is not received, attendance will not be permitted.

Refunds will not be issued for withdrawals under any circumstances.

In the event that the program is cancelled by CCP, a full refund will be given.
