The Rotary Youth Arts Project (RYAP) is a cooperative project between arts organisations within the City of Yarra: Dancehouse, Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP), Artful Dodgers and Rotary. Since 2005 young people living, studying or attending services in the City of Yarra are invited to participate in a photography workshop at CCP.

The 14-week course, presented by artist and educator Hanna Tai covered a wide range of photography subjects and approaches to making work, including documentary photography, the urban environment, identity, abstraction and surrealism. The group has also discussed how to develop a series of images from an idea and how to transform a concept into a tangible photograph. Participants were given Kodak digital cameras for the duration of the course and their images were projected for class feedback and discussion.

Students gained an understanding of the history of photography through discussion of the work of key contemporary photographers. Classes also addressed how to present and discuss student's work, exhibition making, camera skills, terminology, photographic themes and the strategies artists utilise. Participants have adapted strategies and themes to suit their own lives and approaches, in an exploration of identity and self.

With the collective goal of an exhibition at CCP in their sights, participants also worked as a group, giving advice, support and communicating their ideas to achieve these final group presentations.

Students were ably supported by Lochlan Bradfield, RYAP youth worker and Bridget Flood, RYAP Project Coordinator. Clare Rae and Victoria Bennett assisted in Photoshop editing classes with participants at the Fitzroy Learning Network.

On behalf of the participants, CCP acknowledges and thanks Artshub, Crumpler, City of Yarra, Fitzroy Learning Network, Kodak, Rae and Bennett Fine Art Printers, Rotary Club of Carlton, Rotary Club of Richmond and Rotary Club of Collingwood.

Without this support, RYAP's MOBILE MINDS would not have been possible.

This is the first year that young people living, studying or attending services in the City of Yarra were invited to participate in a film workshop at the Artful Dodgers Studios, as part of RYAP.

The 14-week course, presented by artist and educator Ez Eldin Deng covered a wide range of film subjects and approaches to making work, including writing, directing, editing and making sound tracks. Students improve their understanding of the history of filming through weekly discussions of film and what elements existed in the film to make it interesting. The group has also discussed how to develop storylines from an idea and how to transform into a film or moving image. After each student created their story, they were given digital cameras to make it.

With the goal of creating short films at the Artful Dodgers studio, the grouped worked together as a team giving advice and support to each other, communicating their ideas to achieve these final films.

Students were ably supported by Anna Benjamin, City of Yarra Youth Worker and Bridget Flood, RYAP Project Coordinator. As well as Carlio Grimma, and Jessica Fallow assisted in film classes with participants at the Artful Dodgers Studios.

Ez Eldin and the participants acknowledges and thanks Kate Geck and the staff at Artful Dodger Studios, Swinburne University, Artshub, City of Yarra, Dancehouse, Rotary Club of Carlton, Rotary Club of Richmond and Rotary Club of Collingwood.

Without this support, RYAP's MOBILE MINDS would not have been possible.
