This photograph has been selected from a series of three that I took from an apartment in the Upper East Side overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. It was early Spring (late March) and it had unexpectedly snowed. I remember looking down though a window at this amazing 'Zen-like' scene. The traces of where people had walked and the tyre marks left in the snow by passing cars are reminiscent of the raking sand patterns found in Zen Gardens. The colours in the images are very minimal. This is primarily because of the snow and it being overcast. But it is also true to my palette/aesthetic. I prefer to photograph when it is overcast or the light is soft and use film/paper that are low in contrast. The photographs may initially appear to be B&W photographs but then the longer one looks at the photographs, the little bits of colour slowly reveal themselves. I enjoy this revelation. Also, the little specks of colour carry more weight in a muted background. I find that muted colours and greys offer the viewer a space for contemplation. They are melancholic and full of potential.
