untitled Siev, from Contain series 2003, type C print, 60 x 70 cm, ed. 3/12

This photograph is from a series titled Contain which I completed in 2003. A series of landscape images were juxtaposed with a large photograph of an austere shipping container. These works readily invited multiple interpretations and do not have any specific references. However, whilst making the work I was interested in how certain events can penetrate our consciousness and find a photographic form.

In October 2001 a small fishing vessel known as the SIEV X which was headed to Christmas Island sank within Australia’s border protection zone and approximately 146 children, 142 women and 65 men died. There were 44 survivors.

This photograph was taken during the process of making work for the show polar in 2007. A single bent tree stands alone braced against an implied force. I like taking photographs of landscapes that do not give a clear indication of their location and suggest a position of anywhereness.
