CCP Fundraiser: a resounding success
Centre for Contemporary Photography announces the success of the 2009 CCP Limited Edition Print provided by eminent Australian artist, Bill Henson. With characteristic generosity, Henson provided the major photograph, Untitled 1985/86/2009, in an edition of 12 large prints that sold out over three days raising $118,800. Eighty percent of funds raised through the Edition enable CCP to support the practice and presentation of contemporary photography through provision of exhibitions, education, public programs and publishing in 2009 and 2010; Bill Henson retained twenty percent of sales.
The 2009 Edition included a small launch at CCP with guest speaker Professor Kristy Edmunds, Head, School of Performing Arts Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts & Music, who celebrated Henson’s contribution to Australian art as well as CCP's role in supporting Australian photomedia artists.
In the series from which this work belongs, Bill Henson shifted decisively to colour photography. These images depict the highly improbable juxtaposition of Australian suburbia with ancient Egyptian ruins, punctuated by enigmatic portraits of teenagers and moody cloudscapes. Bill Henson is a generous and frequent supporter of not-for-profit arts organisations and other non-art related charitable causes across Australia. He has donated work to CCP fundraising appeals on many occasions. CCP is most grateful for his support in 2009.
CCP warmly acknowledges Bill Henson for his tremendous support of CCP and photomedia in Australia. We also thank the generous sponsors who helped to create this special event; Calendar Cheese Company, Cope Williams Arts Foundation, Sanpellegrino, SMXL Catering, Tint Design, Sainsbury’s Books and Paul the Painter as well as the astute collectors and supporters who have contributed toward the development of CCP through their purchase of the 2009 CCP Limited Edition Print.
Bill Henson’s Edition follows the previous successful 2008 CCP Limited Edition Print in which Anne Zahalka’s The Bathers 1989, an edition of 12 prints also sold out. Through the Limited Edition series CCP offers collectors an annual opportunity to purchase significant Australian photographs in a limited edition, with the aim of supporting present and future Australian photography. Over time buyers will have acquired a major collection whilst also supporting the CCP. CCP will announce the artist of the CCP Limited Edition Print 2010 early next year.
