ABOUT THE ARTIST

Darren Sylvester's ever-expanding practice involves photography, sculpture, video, music, books and performance. Often encompassing a wide range of narratives from pop culture, each medium is given high-end production sheen so as to pique discussion on contemporary ennui and mortality. Sylvester exhibits widely within Australia and internationally and was the only Australian selected for Vitamin Ph, produced by Phaidon Press as a definitive contemporary photography book. His work is held in public collections including NGA, Canberra, NGV, Melbourne, AGSW, Sydney and AGWA, Perth. He was a studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne and is represented by Sullivan and Strumpf, Sydney.

Session 1 New Techniques in Contemporary Photomedia

You will examine a number of techniques employed by contemporary artists such as Cory Arcangel, Charlie White, Sawada Tomoko, Thomas Demand, Aliki Braine and Filippo Minelli. You will look at the innovations of installation artists AES+F, Pierre Huyghe and Paul Pfieffer and discuss the crossover between commercial and fine art photography in the work of Roe Ethridge, and Christopher Williams before finally exploring ideas of post-photography with Olaf Breuning and Doug Aitken.

Session 2 Workflow – From Budgets to Post Production

In the second class Sylvester gives an insight into his own practice, tracking how photographs are conceived, researched, planned, fabricated and executed. Workflow descriptions will include working through budgets, dealing with construction, tungsten lighting techniques, props, hair and make up, post production, printing and framing.
